Camera Angles & Film Techniques

This video is an example of an eye level shot, as it is positioned in the same place as the subject's line of sight. I stood directly in front of my subject, Cayley McCloskey and recorded the video to get a perfect view of her eyes in the sunlight. This shot was fairly easy to capture and understand, and turned out well.

This shot is a demonstration of a Close Up (CU). In the video I crouched down to focus the video on the tapping foot. By isolating the tapping foot as my subject, viewers are directly faced with an object they may not typically focus on. I thoroughly enjoyed filming this shot, and think it is a very useful angle that gives viewers a better understanding of a scene.

This video is an example of a two-shot in which the subjects, Loren and Cayley, are having a conversation with each-other. It is a medium shot that is wide enough to incorporate both people. When I took this shot, I had to crouch a little bit to film the video from a better angle of my friends sitting at the table.

I took this video as a medium shot. I recorded the subject here, Cayley, from her knees up while she danced around a school hallway. This angle was very easy to shoot, and I think it is a very effective way of portraying the subject of the film.

This video demonstrates a point of view shot. I pointed the camera in the directions I was looking to make the audience see from my point of view. By placing my phone before of my face, the video was also taken from the same level as my height.

This is a tilt shot, because it moves up along a vertical axis. The vertical axis seen here is the stairs. An example of follow shot is also seen here following the boy climbing the steps. This shot incorporates two film styles, into one.

This video is an example of the Dolly Shot which is accomplished by moving the camera through a space, as if it were on tracks. We took this shot by taking a rolly chair and pushing it down our school hallway. It was a fairly easy process, and had a very professional looking outcome.

I recorded this video from the second floor balcony of nation square. It is a high angle shot depicting students being reminded to social distance. Although the angle is uncommon, it gives viewers a great sense of the space in a film scene. It was quite an easy angle, as I simply held my phone over the balcony and recorded the people below.

This video is a demonstration of a follow shot, in which I followed Cayley down the stairs. Although one may argue that this shot is over the shoulder, I would not categorize it as such, because it doesn't show the space from directly behind the subject's point of view, but rather a more distant and wide angle.

While being a high-angle shot, this video is also an extreme long shot from an aerial distance. The frame shows students eating lunch, and incorporates the entire outdoor space. It can also be described as an establishing shot, because it depicts the lunch period and it's mood. It was quite easy to film, as I just recorded from the second floor balcony outside.

  1. Zoe, I loved your storyboard! As I went through all the shots, I noticed how almost all of them were done perfeclty with a really professional appearnce to them. The Close up, Point of view, and Dolly shot were my favorite and made me feel like I was watching a short film about school. I also liked how you used the school setting and incorperated that mood of a teen movie/short film, it made me feel like I was a character or bystandard at school. I can tell that you put a lot of effort in captivating these shot. Great job :)

  2. One of my personal favorite shots was the Dolly shot. It was felt as those i was being moved through an empty space, and it was the shot that i felt most connected too. The high angle shot was also moving because it made it feel like the courtyard was being swallowed up , and made me feel more powerful. My other favorite shot was the eye level shot gave me the most familiar view , because it was like i was looking at the subject in person.

  3. Great job Zoe! It looked amazing! All your shots were done very well and were effective in their purpose. I think my personal favorite is the dolly shot, but I also loved the high angle shot at the end and your point of view shot. I loved the way the camera moved in the dolly shot because I felt as if I was there and connected to shot; the view/angle was different but fun and interesting. I also really liked your high angle shot at the end because I it made me feel like I was in power and had control. I felt like if I was above all the students and looking at them from above; this shot does a great job of capturing the scene from a different perspective in which we can see the activity of the students in the courtyard. I really enjoyed the point of view shot because it made me feel as if I was you and looking down at the floor seeing my feet, but then when you look up you see people/friends. In a way the shot made me feel as if I was you or was there with you because the view felt so real and I think personally the shot was really cool. Overall, outstanding job Zoe and I loved all your shots!
