Finding the Master Edits

The following clips are from Season 7 of “The 100” on Netflix.

Parallelism

This video is an example of parallelism as it transitions from the character Hope's face as a child, to her face as a fully grown adult. The parallelism seen here is in her facial structure, which allowed the transition to flow so smoothly. The character was abandoned on a planet after her mother and aunt were taken into custody by an intergalactic people. The scene that followed was Hope's face as a fully grown adult, on her way to avenge her mother. The master edit was used very well here and allowed viewers to make a connection between the scenes. The difference in hope was clear, but the parallelism alluded to her aspects which hadn't changed from her childhood.

Contrast

The master edit used in this clip is contrast, demonstrated by the harsh change in dark scenery in the first clip to the bright white setting in the second. The first scene shows a part of the human race on the planet "Sanctum", which is facing a potential civil war due to the number of clans with opposing religious beliefs. The next scene shows the futuristic planet Bardo, which displays the other half of the human race. Although those on Sanctum know nearly nothing about them, the 'disciples' of Bardo are highly informed on the clans and their state. The black and dark colors which stand out in the scene on Sanctum reflect the people's ignorance, and how they are quite literally in the dark. The white dress and scenery to follow demonstrates that the people of Bardo are enlightened.

Simultaneity

Although this scene is similar to the last, the master edit used here is simultaneity. While the aforementioned leaders of Sanctum decide how to handle their civil war, the clip transitions to the others training on Bardo to become disciples. The differences highlighted by this edit are the old-fashioned ways of those on Sanctum happening at the exact same time as the highly advanced society on Bardo. It reflects the differences that people groups may have on a drastic scale. The key focus of this edit it to highlight the differences, while reminding viewers that the scenes are still happening at the same time.
